Driving for Work

Annually around 3,400 people are killed and more than 44,500 seriously injured in accidents on Britain’s roads.

It is estimated that about 30% of these involve ‘at work’ drivers and as many as 1,000 people die every year in occupational accidents on our roads compared with under 350 in other work related accidents.

As an organization/employer, you have a moral as well as a legal duty to manage your employees risk on the road in the same way as any other Health & Safety issue. This obligation can be met through the introduction and implementation of a DRIVING AT WORK POLICY with education and training being the key.

Employers need to be aware that as of April 2008 the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 means for the first time that, companies and organizations can be found guilty of corporate manslaughter as a result of serious management failures resulting in gross breach of a duty of care. THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EMPLOYERS TO THINK AGAIN ABOUT HOW RISKS ARE MANAGED, INCLUDING DRIVING AT WORK RELATED RISKS.

As part of managing the risk and providing benefit to both employee and company the provision of individual “Occupational Driver Assessment” courses with a qualified assessor is seen as an essential element in improving standards and reducing the impact on any business.

The second part of the process is an initial assessment, grading each individual from 1-4, four being “Dangerous” the object is to gain improvement in that score by the time they are again assessed, this being achieved through fault identification, analysis and immediate remedial action.
